Carefully read two opposing opinion pieces about the value of the Humanities in today’s STEM-driven academic culture. Take notes as you read to better understand the positions articulated by the two authors. Write down your observations of how each author defines the problem or controversy they are addressing. Determine how each author views the context in which this problem has arisen. For example, what is happening within American education to generate articles like this—governmental initiative, special incentives, changes in testing, changes in curriculum, etc.? Determine the position (or claim) each author is stating and the pieces of evidence each author provides to support his position.
The first—“Why America’s Obsession with STEM Education is Dangerous” Download “Why America’s Obsession with STEM Education is Dangerous”— is an opinion piece from the Washington Post by columnist Fareed Zakaria. He is also the author of “in Defense of a Liberal Education.” The opposing opinion piece—“There Is No Case for the Humanities” Download “There Is No Case for the Humanities”—is written by Justin Stover, a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, England.
Your assignment is to write a POSITION paper, similar to the articles you have just read- which are published OPINION pieces. Your POSITION paper will need to be at least 3 pages and no longer than 6 pages. The paper must follow MLA formatting guidelines and be double-spaced with 12-point Times New Roman font. If you will be citing additional selected resources, you will need a “Works Cited” page). No alternate formatting will be accepted. The rubric for this writing assignment is included.
Your position must be argued in well-written paragraphs that carefully construct your points based on evidence and examples. As a position paper, additional research is not required; you may , however, choose to do additional research to strengthen your argument. You may do research and use data gathered from opinion polls, economic analyses, educational model comparisons or any source that relates to the topic of the value of the humanities in American curriculums from grade school to the graduate level in college.
This paper is YOUR opinion. You must first determine how you feel about the value of the study of literature, arts, architecture, philosophy, etc. in your educational experience. You may site as examples any experience (positive or negative) you may have had in your educational career so far or in your own life outside institutional education. But you must craft your argument with evidence to support your opinion and arrange the evidence in distinct paragraphs.
Your evidential support needs to contain at least 3 separate points, developed within the body of the paper. Your paper should start with a summary of the issue and a clear statement of the problem and your own POSITION somewhere near the beginning of the paper. Be sure you have a concluding paragraph that sounds like a conclusion. It should not just be a repeat of your initial thesis or position, but should offer up some new information or elaborate on your opinion in some way- preferably in a way that adds to the CONCLUSIVE tone of your last paragraph. You may construct your argument in any way you like. But it must be a constructed argument, with rational presentation of points and evidence.
