Phi 101GA—Writing Assignment (due November 7)
Submit your essay in the Turnitin.com link for the Writing Assignment in Learning Module # 8.
TOPIC: Happiness: Compare and contrast Aristotle’s and Mill’s concepts of happiness.
Which view do you support? Why?
Step 1: Analyze Aristotle’s and Mill’s respective concepts of happiness.
▪ Evaluate happiness in the context of each ethical theory.
▪ What does each philosopher understand happiness to be?
▪ What role does happiness play in each philosopher’s ethical theory?
Step 2: Compare and contrast Aristotle’s and Mill’s respective concepts of happiness.
▪ Critically evaluate Aristotle’s and Mill’s respective concepts of happiness.
▪ Identify the strengths and weaknesses of each view?
▪ Which view do you support? Why?
Note: The Writing Assignment must refer directly to the Aristotle and Mill readings in Modules 5
and 6 through parenthetical citations (author line/page). You are not being asked to quote from the
texts. You are being asked to indicate the reference in the respective texts that supports your
claims.
Guidelines
• The topic should be addressed in conjunction with the assigned reading from Aristotle’s
Nicomachean Ethics (Module 5) and Mill’s Utilitarianism (Module 6).
• Use PowerPoints # 4 and 5 as resources to think through the topic.
• Refer to the texts using parenthetical citation (author, page/line #).
• Quotes from Aristotle’s and Mill’s texts are limited to 3 lines of your essay.
• Secondary sources and use of the internet are not allowed in this essay.
Requirements
• This is not a research paper. Your discussion should be based on an analysis of Aristotle’s and
Mill’s arguments.
• You must specify the respective passages in Aristotle’s and Mill’s texts that ground your
argument using parenthetical citation (author, page #). Reference to the respective passages
does not mean that you should quote from the texts.
• You are writing an analytic essay, not a summary. Do not write in the first person.
• Avoid generalizations. Clarify the thesis in the first paragraph of the essay. Develop the thesis
through well-reasoned arguments. Formulate a concluding paragraph that relates back to the
thesis.
• The paper should be 2- 3 pages of your writing (minimum) without quoted text, typed in 12-inch
font, double-spaced with one-inch margins. Do not include a cover sheet.
Grading
Both the content (textual analysis) and the presentation (grammar, style, clarity) will determine your
grade
