For this assignment, you will be drawing on the documents in Chapter 3 of the Major Problems book (Chapter 3: Industrialization, Labor, and the New Immigration). http://www.americanyawp.com/text/wp-content/uploads/yawp_v2_open_pdf.pdf You can draw on any of the nine documents in this chapter or the two secondary source essays.
For your paper, imagine it is 1880 and you are a resident of one of one of the following countries: Slovakia, Poland, China, or Ireland. (You can choose whether you are a man or a woman. You can also decide the religion of your 1880 self.) You are offered the opportunity to come to the United States. Do you take the opportunity? Why or why not? What might draw you to the U.S.? What hazards might you be afraid of? If you come, would you plan to stay for good? Support your choice with specific evidence from the documents? Use the readings in the American Yawp for background on the era.
Papers should be roughly 3-4 pages in length.
All papers must include the following
A title. The title should come at the top of the first page, not on a separate title page.
Correct spelling and punctuation.
Footnotes for direct quotes. (See below.)
Good papers will start with a thesis statement that answers the question at hand. They are also organized into paragraphs that logically support the argument by providing specific evidence from the readings.
A bibliography is not required for this assignment.
Guidelines for Using Chicago-Style Footnotes
Dr. Bennett
The use of footnotes rather than parenthetical documentation is the hallmark of the Chicago Style, the notation style preferred by historians. The name comes from The Chicago Manual of Style, now in its fifteenth edition, which is published by the University of Chicago Press. It is the preferred notational style of historians, in part because it allows for clearer prose free from distracting parentheses. To use this style, use the following instructions.
When you quote or otherwise use an idea presented in a source, you need to provide a footnote. You insert the footnote at the end of the sentence in which you use the source.
Inserting a footnote in Microsoft Word depends on the version:
For older versions, click “Insert” on the toolbar and then selecting “Reference” and then “Footnote.” In the dialogue box that appears, make sure “Footnotes” is selected in the “Location” section, and verify that the “Number Format” is “1, 2, 3…” Click “Insert”; a superscript number will appear at the end of your sentence and your cursor will appear next to the same number (also in superscript) at the bottom of the page.
For the latest version, select the “References” Tab on the toolbar. Click “Insert Footnote”.
Enter your citation using the format in the documents.
Subsequent citations may be done in short form, providing only the last name of the author, the short title, and the page number(s).
